We approached this house plan design with the intention of remaining as faithful as possible to the original Charleston single-side floor plans. We centered the front entrance on a long side porch; it opens into a foyer and stairway. These historic single side homes almost always have a matching living room and dining room on either side of the foyer; we maintained this room layout to preserve the look and feel of an actual old house.
Once we left the "old" part of the house, we began to take liberties with the floor plan to make it relevant to today's families and lifestyles. We created an open kitchen with an island and snack bar, a sunny breakfast room, and a keeping room for family conversations. We then added a floor plan extra that would have been incomprehensible to the original single-side inhabitants - a spacious computer area at the rear entrance.
On the second floor, each bedroom has a private bath and walk-in closet. A long second floor porch replicates the symmetry of the porch below. A second computer area is located on this floor; or, this area could be taken in to the master suite as a sitting area or even a second closet.
The third floor has the perfect spot for an exercise enthusiast; or, this space could be used as a home theater. One who works out of his/her home would find it quiet, secluded, and ideal for an office. There is also another bedroom and bath located on this third level. A long balcony overlooks the side yard below.
